Overland Expo 2009

I’m really excited about this weekend. I’m going to the Overland Expo in Prescott, Arizona. There are a bunch of discussions, hands on riding courses and of course a bunch of people waiting to sell you stuff you never thought you needed in the first place. I’m looking forward to the courses and discussions the most. I just spent and hour figured out how I could take all the courses I wanted. So, here’s what I’ll be learning about:

  • Friday
    • Capturing the Adventure: Overland Photography (Chris Marzonie)
    • Security in the Real World (Jason Ramos)
    • Food: Storage, Preparation & Local Supply (Connie Rodman)
    • Capturing the Adventure: Overland Videography (Josh White)
    • Creative Journaling for the Overlander (Roseann Hanson)
    • Getting Your Stories Published (Jonathan Hanson)
  • Saturday
    • Overland Riding: The Real World (Lois Pryce)
    • Get your photos published (Stephanie Brady & Jonathan Hanson)
    • Documentation for International Travel (Graham Jackson)
    • Red Tape & White Knuckles: Overlanding in Africa (Lois Pryce)
    • Getting Your Stories Published (Jonathan Hanson)
    • Hi-Tech Communication Options in the Field (Nick Taylor)
  • Sunday
    • Adventure Motorcycle Riding (Lois Pryce & Tom Collins)
    • First Aid Kits for Overlanding (Andrew Moore)
    • Forty-three Countries – Lessons Learned (Doug Hackney & Stephanie Hackney)
    • Cultures: International diplomacy (Jonathan Hanson)
    • Overland Navigation: Where am I? (Graham Jackson)

Hopefully I can make some contacts regarding the publishing aspects. So it’s going to be an intense weekend, but I think a lot of fun. If I learn nothing, then I think being surrounded by other people who have the same ambitions as I will at least give me a moral boost about what I want to do.

For those of you who are late to the show, I’m planning to travel from Alaska to Argentina by motorcycle. You can read more about it in this series of posts or see the my general route here.

Will have a lot to report on next week, see you guys then!

Wow! I’m extremely jealous and really looking forward to your report of the expo…If it had been closer to NC I would have tried to make it out…

This looks to be an incredible adventure! I have two questions though, and forgive me if they’ve already been asked or are too personal, but:

How much would you estimate the trip will cost?
How do you intend to fund it?

I ask because I have similar ambitions, and I’m wondering if there’s some way to make money on the road, either by selling pictures and stories of the trip, or otherwise.

Even if you chose not to answer, I wish you the best for your travels and look forwards to reading about them here!

I am budgeting my trip at $40 a day. Fuel, food and shelter are the major costs.

I’m trying to find ways to make money on the road through travel writing and photography, just like you mentioned. I’ll have more to discuss about these areas in the future.

I had no idea that was going on, and only a little day’s ride away. Next year’s calendar is already marked. How was it?
